Reading Responce

Flush
* * * * *
Recently, I have read an amazing novel by Carl Hiaasen known as Flush. I truly enjoyed this book because it focused on the story of a boy named Noah Underwood and his struggle to prove his dad right about the dumping of Dusty Muleman's ship. Although no one believes him, he never gives up. This was truly amazing, not only because he was so loving but also because he had a high sense for danger. I truly recommend this book to people who have a knack for humor mixed with amazing and action-packed adventure. Even if you aren't fond of very high resolution scripts, this is a well-written piece witch to me seems real in many different ways.

Elements used throughout this book have not only given some back up information for new characters but also has drawn a line between current plots and passed ones. What I mean by this is that no matter how many things occur in this book, they all lead up to Noah and his struggle to prove his dad right toward the Coral Queen incident. For intense, the mysterious happening of Lice Peeking came all the way back to Paine Underwood sinking Dusty's ship.

Also, the author did a great job of introducing the Florida background (setting) into the novel. Being the writer of the award winning Hoot as well, he is known for his detail settings and places. In doing this, he also kind of set a limit towards how far the characters personalities. For example, the brother and sister bod between Abbey and Noah was great. This allowed them to be a part of many different plots which moved the story on really well.

Lastly, I enjoyed how the family stories of the Underwood's got introduced whenever there was an opening. This little detail was important because it allowed the reader to feel closer to the characters and really feel for them. It also allowed for a sequel because Noah's grandpa was now going back to South America.

In the end, I found this book rather interesting in a way that I now want to know what will happen to the Mulemans or what will happen to Grandpa Bobby. I again, recommend this book to anyone even if you are not into fictional stories because this did involve places and conflicts that are real to our world not only the fact that they apply to our lifestyles but also that they make who we are.

Messenger- The Closing of Village's Boarder

Being one of the oldest places to live, the people have decided to close the boarder making it impossible for guests to come into this amazing place. What doesn't make sense however, is the fact that everyone who belongs there have immigrated from other villages and have been welcomed into this place with warm hearts but suddenly, now the people have voted to close them down. What would be the cause for such a dreadful thing? Maddy thought to himself as he and Seer (the blind man he lives with) noticed the change in the air slowly but strongly; People are changing and it isn't pretty.

Matty and Seer would always talk to eachother for after all, they are pretty much family after they both escaped from their old villages. Matty had brought up the Trade Mart and what had happened last night: people coming with nothing to trade however in the end, they got what they wanted. He had been trying to figure what they were trading but then he noticed the difference in personality with the people who had done that sort of trade. He noticed for example, that the nice lady who had lived down the street, on the way home was tormenting her husband about how he walked so slow but he had a tweaked spine so that was how he always walked. As the days past, the poll for keeping up the boarder grew nearer and he noticed that the group of people that were for closing of the boarder grew bigger with that.

Newcomers make up Village and the leader of this horrible group surprisingly was mentor. Some new ones had recently arrived in Village the other day however instead of being greeted like always, they were disturbed by this taunting mob. Matty came across one of them and was later implied some terrible news about that one's family. He discovered that because she could only bring one to the community, she had to leave her daughters and come back for them. However, because of the disruption of Forest, she was not able to get back. Here, is where Matty comes in.

Having a very important job, Messenger, Matty is in charge of delivering messages to different communities. He is the only one Forest trusts. Not only shall he go from place to place but now people count on him to do things that they can't. So now, he will have to go receive Seer's daughter who lives in Matty's old village. Just finding out of a new power, Matty will face some true challenges along with secrets yet to found out.

Messenger

Recently I started an incredible novel called Messenger by Luis Lowery. He has taken me in to levels of reading in which I have never thought about. Last year, for a reading project I read The Giver. Like with other books we were told to find the main idea and concept of the piece however, I found out that the significance with the way he writes effects the way on how you look at the book. I had to get used to his ideas in order to make them seem worth while. I enjoyed reading that book and am again coming back and reading the sequel.

What the author is writing about, being fiction are different places where each of their laws and governs are completely different and the interest in society. He takes different jobs in our world today and turns them into dreams. Such as taking a mail man and making him a messenger who now has the responsibility to cross through the forbidden forest in order to leave Village and go to different places. Another main part of their town are the New Ones. Everyone is new at something except for those who start off there. In Village, the concept of newcomers is exciting and is truly important. The villagers take time in welcoming their new guests except for now. There has seem to come some difference in the air starting with the schoolteacher who has been acting strangely and protesting against any more people coming in to Village.

Being new in this place, Matty (our main character) has learn to overcome the changes from his past life. He had escaped from his old place which was filled with broken laws and willing pain. He and Seer (a blind man who took him in when he needed help) try to figure out the mischief that is happening in their town while they discover the differences of life.

Birdwing Summary

Books that go in detail about events in the past have always brought the attention to a reader. Recently, in class, we learned about what it takes to write a solid memoir. In this experience, we learned multiple techniques that draw the reader in and make something sound exiting and interesting. One of these many subjects was the flashback technique which allows readers to go back and experience the event while it is happening. I have started a book which goes in full depth of the many happenings of the past. I have started the fabulous book, Birdwing by Rafe Martin. So far I have really enjoyed it and I recommend it to anyone who has a knack for fiction/adventure books.

In the reborn palace of the king, there lived six boys and a girl. After the death of hi wife, the king demanded no more as to them having the best life possible. With the exception of royalty, he was threatened to marry a woman for his life. In this arranged marriage, he had to hide his own children in a forgotten forest where they only see him ounce a week. The thing is, with all of these trips, his wife begins to become suspicious of his wear abouts, so she follows his foot prints one day to the unknown hide out and turns every one of the six boys into swans. Luckily, the sister had been out picking berries and had saw the whole thing so she knew what had happened. However the only way to turn them back, is to not speak or even whimper. She goes through the most heart breaking and devastating challenges, making 6 beaded sweaters that would help to save her brothers but in the end she completes her goal except for one little sleeve, where she missed. This is where the story begins, it is about the troubles going through life with a wing as an arm.

This book brings you on many adventures which in the end, summarize being different. I have so far really enjoyed this novel and recommend it to anyone with this kind of taste.

Summer of My German Soldier- Mr. Anton Reiker

What I have always believed to be a great book is one that has characters who are somehow surprising to read about whether the astonishment comes from the character's life or actions created by that certain person. What I truly liked about Bette Greene's creativity in Summer Of My German Soldier was that she used two different perspectives on one character. This character Patty Bergen, was one of dislike for she believed that her mom didn't appreciate her as a person because she didn't have the same beauty as she did. She is a very strong person however, she is brought down many times because she is different and cares more about her comprehension then her looks. The only friends that she had were her grandma, who spoiled her and her family's "nigger" Ruth. This is until she makes friends with a German prisoner of war.

At first, Patty and Anton met at her parents' store while the prisoners were there to buy straw hats for the cotton fields. Anton spoke with an amazingly perfect English vocabulary as the interpreter of the prisoners. As he wondered off, to look around, Patty took position as the clerk and helped him with his needs. While they talked, their friendship grew however, would they ever see eachother after this moment?

What soon became to became the top headline effected not only Patty's life but the plot of the story. The friendly German that Patty had met at the store, had just escaped from the prison camp that had held 15 other prisoners. He then became the one that everyone looked for. She knew that if there were any hope for his survival, she needed to give him shelter. This is where the story broke out. Mr. Reiker stayed in an old maid's quarters about 50 yards off of the house. It had been abandoned and Patty had fixed it up as her club house.

They over time became good friends but then, it happened, what she dreaded from the beginning, the thing that she knew had to happen did. He had to leave. He had been planing it for a while but when Ruth saw her German friend, they knew it had to be. So it happened. He got ready that afternoon and after saying goodbye to the encouraged Patty who wanted to go along, he took the 6 o'clock train to Winchester.

What has happened so far in he book, I am sure that patty and Anton have to be reunited for a bond like this one can't just leave it's sight, it will come back. Until then, I wait for this moment. When I read this book, I realize not only the meaning of of World War 2, the tragedy, the pain and so on, but the strong will of what you can do in a books like this one.

A New Friend-Summer Of My German Soldier

Good books are ones with deep meaning, a sense of unique style and the aspect that brings the readers attention into what the author is talking about. These kinds of effect have been brought out especially in the amazing novel, Summer Of My German Soldier. I have always been interested in historical fiction but had never truly understood the Holocaust. After reading this book however, I have been able to get to know it a bit more.

When I began to read the book, most of the subjects that the author was speaking of such as what in the world happened that caused the war, but now I can some how relate to these titles. One thing that I wasn't to certain about and still am not sure about is what the initials, POW stand for. They were used on the back of the German prisoner's jacket but what they mean is still blurry.

What has happened so far in this book has truly effected the perspective that I have on the war. However, one thing that is changing the ways of this book is a German prisoner that Patty meets called Anton. Although Patty is not allowed to be friend the Germans let alone talk to them, Patty sees something different in him; "Anton hates Hitler more than anyone else". This is because Hitler killed his family. Patrica met Anton at her parent's store on main street but they became better friends when Anton snook out of the prison camp and secretly stayed in the abandoned maid's quarters which Patty had fixed up to be her club house.

So far, I have begun to become more attached to the many conflicts in the novel. What I have come to realize is that everyone in the world is equal and no matter whom you say you are, each race is equal and there is no point in contradicting someone if you know that they are right. This is a mistake that was made that had an influence on the war.

Summer of My German Soldier (Summary)

I have always been a fan of historical fiction and there is no doubt that the event of the Holocaust fits right in. But see "fitting in" is the argument that this tragic event was about and just that one concept took contact with millions of Jewish peoples lives. You and me are two different people, we look differently, talk differently and probably think differently. The fact is, no one is exactly alike. That being said, "fitting in" should take no effect on the way society runs. However, that is just my opinion. In the 1930s, the Germans believed differently. I have just started what has begun to be a pretty amazing book. It is called Summer of my German Soldier by Bette Greene. It is about Patty, a 12 year-old, Jewish girl in the ear of the war. She lives in a town called Jenkinsville where even the littlest spectacle means that the town's operator and most of the people are gathered around a train station where they see two Nazi prisoners get locked up in their prison. The matter is, because her parents are fixing up an old shop, she is with Ruth, a black Christian woman who works as their maid for most of the time. What makes her time with Ruth so important is that Ruth is a free spirited individual who believes in what she decides to. So far, this book is about what it was like to live as a Jew during the Holocaust. It is about the bonds between two different races and believes. I have really enjoyed reading this book so far and it has a strong base to the events in World War 2.
